Build from source

Requirements

macOS	13 (Ventura) or later
Rust	Stable toolchain via rustup
Node.js	22 or later — only needed for the menubar app
Xcode command line tools	xcode-select --install

The command-line tool

cd dotfix
cargo install --path crates/cli

The menubar app

cd app
npm install
CI=true npm run tauri build

The result is target/release/bundle/macos/dotfix.app and a disk image beside it.

Caution

CI=true is not optional. Without it the packaging step runs an AppleScript to arrange the disk image’s Finder window; that needs Automation permission and fails in a plain terminal session, leaving a mounted volume behind.

Running the checks

Layout

Path	What it holds
crates/core	The engine — drift detection, rendering, secrets, ports
crates/cli	The dotfix command-line tool
app/src-tauri	The menubar app’s Rust side
app/src	The menubar app’s React frontend

The engine is shared, so the command-line tool and the app cannot disagree about what a change means.
