Your first folder
This walks through one folder end to end. Ten minutes, and you will have seen a file go in and paper come out.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”Have a printer installed and working — print a test page from the operating system first. Printy offers exactly the printers the system knows about, and a printer that does not work outside Printy will not work inside it either.
Pick a folder to watch. Create an empty one for this first run rather than pointing at a folder that already holds hundreds of documents.
1. Add the folder
Section titled “1. Add the folder”Open Printy. The Ordner screen is empty on a fresh install. Choose Ordner hinzufügen.
2. Fill in the form
Section titled “2. Fill in the form”| Field | What it means |
|---|---|
| Name | A label for you. “Scanner Empfang”, “Lieferscheine”. |
| Ordner | The folder to watch. Use the picker rather than typing the path. |
| Dateitypen | PDF, JPG, PNG, TIFF — pick the ones that should be printed. Everything else in the folder is ignored. |
| Prüfintervall (Sekunden) | How often Printy looks. Three seconds is the default. |
| Drucker | Where these files go. The system default is preselected. |
| Kopien | How many of each. |
| Duplex | Einseitig, or double-sided on the long or short edge. |
| Farbe | Schwarz-weiß or Farbe. |
| Nach dem Druck | What happens to the file afterwards — see below. |
| Inhalt an Seite anpassen | On: pages are scaled to fill the paper. Off: printed at original size. Oversized content is shrunk either way. |
What “Nach dem Druck” does
Section titled “What “Nach dem Druck” does”- In Unterordner verschieben — printed files move into a
printedsubfolder, failed ones intofailed. The watched folder stays empty, and you can always see what happened. This is the setting to start with. - Liegen lassen — the file stays where it is and Printy remembers it so it is not printed again.
- Löschen — the file is deleted after printing. Only choose this when the file exists somewhere else as well.
The existing-files switch
Section titled “The existing-files switch”When creating a folder, Printy offers Vorhandene n Dateien jetzt mitdrucken, and it is off.
Off means everything already in the folder counts as done — only new arrivals are printed. That default exists so pointing Printy at a folder with two hundred old scans does not immediately print two hundred pages.
Turn it on only when you genuinely want what is already there printed now.
3. Save it
Section titled “3. Save it”Save the form. The folder appears as a card on the Ordner screen with a status dot:
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Aktiv | Watching, on its interval. |
| Pausiert | Switched off, by itself or by the global pause. |
| Wartet auf Drucker | The queue is holding because a printer is unreachable. |
| Ordnerpfad nicht gefunden / Drucker nicht gefunden | Needs fixing — watching is stopped. |
4. Watch it print
Section titled “4. Watch it print”Drop a PDF into the folder. Within your chosen interval it should be picked up, printed, and — with the default post-print rule — appear in the printed subfolder.
If nothing happens, wait one full interval plus a few seconds: Printy waits for a file to stop changing before it queues it, which takes a moment for a file that was just copied in.
5. Check the record
Section titled “5. Check the record”Open Verlauf. The job is listed with its folder, printer, time and outcome.
What to do next
Section titled “What to do next”- Make it start on its own. Einstellungen → Start has Mit Windows starten and Minimiert starten. With both on, Printy is running before anyone logs into anything else.
- Decide about notifications. Einstellungen → Benachrichtigungen: Alle, Nur Fehler, or Aus. Nur Fehler is the usual choice for a machine that prints all day.
- Add the folders that matter. Each one carries its own printer and settings.
- Save the configuration. Einstellungen → Konfiguration exports everything to one file — worth doing once the setup is right. See Backup and transfer.
